If you’re changing the classes you teach or leaving the school, you can transfer a class you own to a co-teacher in the class. If the co-teacher accepts the transfer, they become the primary teacher of the class. You become a co-teacher of the class. The new primary teacher can delete the class.


Only the primary teacher can initiate the transfer process, the Genius Bar is unable to transfer ownership of a class. The Genius Bar can delete the previous primary teacher after the transfer is completed.


Who can you transfer a class to?

  • You can transfer a class to a co-teacher in your domain.


Who owns class materials after a transfer?

After you transfer ownership of a class, the new primary teacher is the owner of:

  • The class Google Drive folder
  • Materials in the class templates folder
  • Turned-in student work
  • Who owns deleted materials?
  • You still own any materials that were deleted before the ownership transfer. If the materials are restored, you still own them.


Transfer a class you own to a co-teacher

  1. Go to classroom.google.com.
  2. Click the class you want to transfer to another teacher.
  3. At the top, click About.
    Click About
  4. On the left, next to the teacher's name, click More More and then Make class owner.
  5. Click Invite.
    Note: You remain the owner of the class until the invitation is accepted. You continue to be a co-teacher if the transfer of ownership is accepted. When the ownership is transferred, you’ll receive a confirmation email.


Revoke an invitation to transfer a class
After you've invited a co-teacher to take ownership of a class, and before the co-teacher accepts, you can revoke the invitation.

  1. Go to classroom.google.com.

  2. Click the class for which you want to revoke an invitation to transfer ownership.
  3. At the top, click About.

    Click About

  4. Next to the teacher's name, click More More and then Revoke invite to own.


Accept or decline a class-owernship transfer

You’ll receive an email when you’re invited to take ownership of another teacher’s class.

  1. In your email program, click the email and then Respond.
  2. Click Accept or Decline.

Note: If you accept, you and the original owner will receive a confirmation email when the transfer is complete.
